This year, the middle school will be performing Seussical the Musical a play written by Stephen Flaherty. The musical involves main character The Cat in the Hat, who narrates multiple stories by Dr. Seuss including Horton Hears a Who. Horton, an elephant from the Jungle of Nool, discovers a small speck floating in the wind, inhabited by the Whos. Horton chooses to help these Whos from mere destruction. He goes through many events and challenges to get these Whos to a safe and secure location. Horton requires many friends through this treacherous adventure.
This year the musical will be directed by Mr. Spenser Smith. Mr. Jason Burgess will not be directing this year because he says that usually the high school musical is in the middle of April but the scheduling of Easter and Prom conflicts with scheduling for the musical. So he chose to put the high school musical in March. Mr. Burgess is still a big part of the show, he is producing the show which means he in charge of all of the financing of the show as well as publicity, hoodies, programs, etc. he is also in charge of the set and the lights for the show as well.
Mr. Smith said, “We are setting the show on a playground. I thought it would be fun, since this show is being performed by middle school kids, to use that to our advantage. The action of the show comes out of Jojo's imagination, so we are using the people around him to help tell the story.” Smith is very excited to be working with everyone who is in the musical and hopes that the audience will enjoy the performances.
The lead roles in Suessical are The Cat in the Hat, which is played by Hank Slaby. Horton played by Peter Laskey. And Jojo who is played by Thomas Gray-Torsell. Hank Slaby, eighth grader, is playing the lead role, The Cat in the Hat. Slaby said, “I am very excited to be in the musical this year. I think my favorite part of being in the musical is having the experience of being in the musical and hanging out with my friends that share the same interest like me.” Come see the middle school musical. The performance dates are January 26th to the 29th.
